How to devise a school Code of Behaviour

In 2008, the NEWB issued Guidelines for schools to use to review and update their codes of behaviour; there is a two-year time limit for this to be completed. Over three nights, Steve will deliver a presentation to introduce participants to these Guidelines and to brief them on their implications, so as to equip them to participate effectively in the review and re-drafting process.

Web 2.0 for Learning Course
This course consists of three modules based on using Web 2.0 in an educational context. Each module has been designed to be of 2.5 hours in duration.
These modules are aimed at primary and post primary teachers who are interested in integrating Web 2.0 technologies into learning and teaching.
There are three modules in total: Introduction to Web 2.0 Tools, introduction to Blogging, introduction to Podcasting. These introductory modules are suitable for both primary and post primary teachers who wish to extend their capacity to use a range of Web 2.0 tools in support of learning and teaching in the classroom environment. This is not a beginner’s course. Participants should be familiar with uploading and downloading files and be comfortable with basic ICT tasks (opening, editing, saving, closing files, etc). They should have some experience of browsing the Internet and be familiar with using e-mail. All participants much have access to a laptop.

Continuing Professional Development for Teachers working with Students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders

The Special Education Support Service (SESS), under the auspices of Teacher Education Section, Department of Education and Science is providing continuing professional development courses for teachers working with students with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) throughout the year 2009 – 2010.The courses will be run in various locations throughout the country.

Contemporary Applied Behaviour Analysis

Tuam Education Centre

September 29^th; October 13^th; November 3^rd& 24^th; December 9^th.

The Contemporary Applied Behaviour Analysis Courses are held over 5 days. The courses are open to:

teachers working in units/classes for students with ASDs in a mainstream setting
teachers in special schools who are currently working with student(s) with ASDs
full-time Resource/Learning Support teachers who are currently working with student(s) with ASDs

Application Procedures

Please note that these courses are for teachers as outlined on the enclosed flier. Places will be allocated according to the listed criteria on a first come first served basis.

The courses will run from 9.00 -16.00 each day.

Participants will require permission from the Board of Management to attend. Substitution for participating teachers will only be allowed by the Teacher Education Section, DES, for teachers with primary responsibility for student(s) with ASDs and if it is deemed absolutely essential by the Principal.

To reserve a place on any of the listed courses please complete an application form and return to the SESS Office.

Current Legislation and its impact on schools and teachers
Oliver Mahon NT, MA, HDE, LLB, BL, Barrister-at-Law will present two nights to teachers outlining current legislation including : School Discipline and the Law. Issues relating to a teacher’s authority, discipline inside and outside school, recent statutory requirements analysed, Natural Justice/Due Process requirements, appeals under sections 28 and 29, discipline and school safety. Oliver will also briefly explain the implications for schools and teachers of all the education statutes including The Education Act since 1998.

A very successful function was held recently in the Ard Rí House Hotel, to celebrate the retirement from teaching of Pat Gilmore and Billy Hannon, two long standing embers of Tuam Education Centre Management Committee. We wish them both a very long and happy retirement.
